BMW 320D turbo replacement

You need car ramp and professional tools and new or reconditioned turbocharger for your BMW 3 Series 320D

Remove the cabin air filter with cover, plastic engine cover, air filter, manifold, exhaust manifold, watch out for wires and various cables.

Turbo replacement is pretty hard job for "no mechanics".

Intake manifold & injectors do not have to be remove.

You definitely need to remove the air filter. air filter housing

Remove 3 plastic covers

Remove the screws from the top of a long extension and "star key".

Remove bottom bracket, disconect feed pipes from turbocharger

Turbo remove from the bottom.

Put back new or rebuilded turbocharger and change oil and all filters.

After that your BMW is ready to go

Check oil level and "do not drive too hard" for couple days.

Remember: your turbocharger is new and need needs attention

BMW turbo specialists saying that after having driven a car with a turbo charged engine, you need to let the engine run for 2 minutes before switching off the engine.

BMW have lots of problems related to turbocharger, always look after oil and filters. I know people who never change air filter in car life. Turbo can't breaf properly.
Why are BMWs so expensive to maintain?
Yes is it. Always use oils and filters recomended by BMW dealer.

BMW 320D common faults

Turbo failures reported on the E90 models, nearly all BMW 320D Models.

Many 320D's are sold its only a very small % however I wanted to note it anyway.

BMW 320D's for 05 - 07 models, with anything from 60.000 to 80.000 miles.

Most reports have suggested a loud whinning or siren noise rather than complete turbo oil seal failure, so if you start to hear these noises, get it looked at.

Best Turbos has been a populare place to get replacements turbochargers, starting at £650 included turbo feed pipes+ new oil and new air and oil filters.

BMW 320D DIY turbo replacement

Depending on your DIY skills there is a huge variation in how long it will take?

Any turbochargers use of "exhaust gas energy", which contributes to the reduction of harmful emissions into the atmosphere.

BMW is stronger and faster, but...

BMW's designers of turbochargers provide "limited life time"

All of the engines for more than 100 years are supported by the work of the turbocharger.

In BMW cars over the years were the most popular diesel engines, turbo charging coming very fast.

Turbo reduce engine capacity, resulted in a massive popularization of turbo charging diesel engines.

Turbo charging is currently experiencing its best years and it seems that completely dominate the design of the engines in the coming years.

Turbo business is grove.

Lots of mechanics change turbo but not change service parts. If rotor or bearing was faulty you need to check turbo pipes if not empty just clean it

Dealer Association wants licensing scheme to clamp down on incompetent car mechanics

Unskilled mechanics are free to set up workshop and repair cars or vans without any training

UK doesn't currently regulate entry to this profession

This is a situation that needs to change asap

Best Turbos have professional skils and NVQ3 or 4 for car mechanics

Check diplomas on the wall in reception

This is my best workshop at the moment

I do recommend

Yes this is Mickey Mouse mechanics :)
Proper mechanic will dismount turbo, clean intercooler, pipes, boost sensor, engine breather (crankcase breather) , air mass air flow sensor, install new turbo and change oil and filters

Crankcase breather if is blocked make lots of problems for turbo and engine

Oily boost sensor as well

Mass flow meters is very important

All turbo system must be clean and tidy

Check electric devices, use BMW diagnosis computer
Turbo system is quite complicated
Maybe boost sensor is faulty or air mass sensor?
Check turbo pipes
Maybe split or disconnected
In my BMW few times come limp mode
I turn off and on engine and power is come back
Nothing wrong but I loose power sometimes

Chance garage or mechanic
